The meeting started at 4:00 P. M. Bruce Drewlow gave an update on inservices completed last Spring/Summer. Ten individuals attended a two day training session at Andersen School in Minneapolis on May 7 & 8. A grant from the state of Minnesota funded this inservice. On June 16-19, 18 individuals, 8 from District 622 and 10 from St. Paul attended an inservice at the Tri-District. Dr. Walter Enloe, Joyce Bell, Dr. Dwight Watson, John Shepard, Kirstin Parker, and Dr. Michael Hartoonian all came to spend time with the participants. A Joint Integration grant was used to fund this activity. A follow-up will be this fall to share progress on projects and lessons developed as part of this inservice. Updates from various buildings about Multicultural events or student groups were given. At Maplewood students attended the 25th Anniversary of the Philippine American Community at Hamline to participate in the Light Festival Day. At Skyview 23 students are learning Japanese as part of their connection with the Japan America Society. Bruce called in regard to membership fees. They changed their policy this school year and each building is required to pay the $100 fee. If you are interested in contacting the Japan America Society, their phone number is 627-9357. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tartan has monthly speakers and events. They are seeking funds to complete a video about what happens in a conflict situation. North High will again have a multicultural style show. Specific dates and times will be reported at a later date. Bruce reported on an upcoming opportunity at Andersen School of Many Voices. November 24, 1997, Andersen will be hosting multicultural workshops all day long. They will also have an exhibit area of materials for purchase. The evening will be highlighted with a diversity lecture and dinner. The speaker for the dinner will be Sonia Nieto. Her topic for the evening is "Defining Education that is Multicultural and Multilingual to Promote High Standards for All." See attached flier for details about cost for all events. I was able to negotiate a discount for those desiring to attend the workshops from our district. Full-day registration would be $25 or half day for $13. You will need to identify yourself as being from District 622. We are not able to get a discount for the meal as those dollars go to cover the expense of the dinner and the speaker. The exhibit area is free and open to the public. There will be some authors there signing books, etc. • Bruce reported on efforts at the high school level to develop supportive school environments for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender students, staff and families. A committee, made up of individuals from both high schools, is exploring options. We have agreed on the following: a statement of need based upon a study, correcting the situation- dealing with the discipline- language in particular, training for staff. Supportive staff, community members and supportive clergy from within District 622 are encouraged to join the process. This is probably a three year commitment. Bruce distributed copies of the new proposed state diversity rule. The district CACC committee will be responsible for implementing this rule. Linda Dailey reported on the availability of fr e e materials available from the Diversity Center in Bloomington. Their phone number is 881-6090. The committee discussed the formation of sub-committees to begin some additional work. We will get into work groups at our next meeting to outline tasks and set meeting dates. Please come to the December meeting ready to join one of the suggested committees named below: Staff Development Curriculum Development School Environment Outreach/Linkages to Community Student Development More or different committees can be created if so desired. Hary Bartz reported on Diversity Inservices that have been competed to date. See attached sheet for inservices completed, scheduled, and the number in attendance. If your school has not scheduled their inservice you should do so immediately. Harvey Bartz's number is 222-0311. Future Meeting Dates are: Dec. 2, 1997, Feb. 5, 1998, and April 23, 1998. All the meetings are in the Board Room at the District Center starting at 4 pm.
