Your insight and expertise have been invaluable. We look forward to further utilizing your expertise in providing our HRC members with an in- service opportunity. I understand that Patrick Kelly has special certifications in mediation and will provide our commission members with useful tools and insights for mediation. In addition, we would like a presentation on Hmong customs and cultural sensitivity. The in-service session is scheduled for June 3, 1997 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The combined presentations should last no longer than one and a half hours. Again, thank you for all your help. COUNTY ROAD B MAPLEWOOD, MINNESOTA 55109 NW l‘rx, May 23, 1997 Mr. H. J. "Bud" Lanning, Principal Weaver Elementary School 2135 Birmingham Street Maplewood, MN 55109 Dear Mr. Lanning: Please forgive the delay in sending this letter. A variety of workshops, presentations, and other business had Commission members bustling more than usual. We apologize if the Weaver staff was inconvenienced by awaiting this information. First, on behalf of the Maplewood Human Relations Commission and the City of Maplewood--thank you. We greatly appreciate that Weaver Elementary School entered the 1997 Diversity Awareness Award contest, and shared a bit of its vision with the Commission. The Learning Services Program described in your application appears to have strong potential for deeply impacting a number of students. We were impressed with the value of the "LSP." The second purpose of this letter is to announce the winners of the various contests--the Diversity Awareness Poster contest and the Diversity Awareness Award Contest. A number of students won cash awards (and all students that entered received certificates) in the Poster contest. It was a delight to see the walls of a City Hall conference room completely covered by a vast array of colors and ideas from our community's primary students. Enclosed is a list of student winners. The Tri-District School has won the 1997 Diversity Awareness Award contest. The Human Relations Commission found that school's entry to be very demonstrative of increasing student and citizen awareness of the diversity of people in our society--a main criterion for the contest. A copy of that entry is enclosed for your information. Mr. Lanning, we have heard wonderful things about Weaver's programming and projects around diversity issues. We encourage you and your students to enter next year's Diversity Awareness Award and Poster contests. Again, thank you for your submission and your interest in the Human Relations Commission goals. Please share our sentiments with your co-applicants: Debrah Johnson, Peggy Kruschwitz, and JoAnne Parenteau. Best wishes in forming the LSP summer program.
