CALL TO ORDER II. REVIEW OF MINUTES Minor corrections made in the Business Outreach Letters section. Minutes will be approved at the next meeting due to lack of a quorum. III. OLD BUSINESS A. League of MN Human Rights Campaign Thursday, June 17, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. We will host the meeting in the Council Chambers. We will provide coffee and muffins. City officials from surrounding communities will be invited. B. Acts of Bias and Prejudice The Commission needs to identify the response network. C. Commission Vacancy Applicant Shelly K. Strauss was interviewed and spoke about the reasons she is interested in serving on the Commission. D. Open House We need coverage from 5 - 9 p.m. One table will be available in the lobby for the Commission. We will try to cover our table with two members of the Commission. Pat and Gordon will be here at 5:00 p.m.. Mike will be here at 6:30. Key chains and brochures about the Commission will be handed out. The Diversity Awareness Award will be handed out at 8:30 p.m., and a representative from Premier Bank will be here to present the $500.00 check. E. Diversity Award All applicants will be thanked in the press release announcing the winner. IV. NEW BUSINESS A. Mike LaClair has resigned effective June 15 because he is moving to Cottage Grove. B. Retirement party for Fulton Klinkerfues on Tuesday, June 1. Karla and Pat will be attending. V. REPORTS A. League of MN Human Rights Commission The League was asked to take over No Fault Grievance training. The League questioned what legal authority they would have if they took over the training. So far no decision has been made. There is an opening for the secretary position for the League. No date has been set for the Annual Meeting. B. Karla met with the Partnership. They are concerned about the number of young people that hang out at the Mall. Karla set up a meeting with Hal Norgard to discuss the internship for the minority police position that we would like to set up for Maplewood. Hal said that there is no money available right now, but Karla is looking at alternate ways of raising the money. C. Grievances Pat is continuing her follow-up on the grievance that was referred to the Commission at the last meeting. CALL TO ORDER II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Motion to approve with minor corrections by Jim Garrett, seconded by and Gordon. Ayes - all III. OLD BUSINESS A. Business Outreach Letters - The Commission reviewed applications from three businesses and made minor suggestions for changes. Pat will be drafting letters to the businesses addressing those suggestions. B. Acts of Bias/Prejudice - Responding to an act of bias/prejudice should be the phrase used instead of a hate crimes - commission members will provide input to develop a response network at the next meeting. C. League of MN Human Rights Campaign - Pat - Called several commissions to see if they wanted to co-host a meeting - New Brighton, Roseville, and Falcon Heights might be interested in co-hosting; purpose to interest new cities in forming their own commissions. Dates suggested were the 2nd & 4th Tuesday or Thursday of June. D. Commission Vacancy - Ad in paper and several calls - no applications returned as of yet. E. Maplewood Open House - We will be first on awards program to present Diversity Award at 8:30 p.m. on that day. Letter to bank so they can be there to present check. Key chains will be available the week before the Open House scheduled for May 11 between 5:00 & 8:00 p.m. Need Commission members there to hand out information and key chains. Jim will check if he can get a computer-generated banner with Commission name. Arrangements will be finalized at the next meeting. F. Diversity Awareness Award - applications were reviewed, and the consensus of the Commission was to give the award to Mounds Park Academy IV. NEW BUSINESS - none V. REPORTS A. League of MN Human Rights Commission (see office memorandum attached). B. City of Maplewood - See copy of memorandum to Chief Collins from Gail Blackstone re: Response to Acts of Bias and Prejudice. Also list of Human Relation Commission members and their terms were handed out. Internship program brought up by Karla for NW suburbs, funded by NW Hennepin Human Services Council. Pays tuition, some funds for living expenses and money for city to provide job, i.e. cadet. Karla to contact Executive Director, Patti Wilder, for more information and possible Ramsey County program. C. Grievances - One referral from the State alleging age discrimination. Pat will do a follow up.
