I. Call to Order
The meeting of the Maplewood Human Relations Commission was called to
order at 7:05 PM, on December 3, 1991, by Karla Sand, Chair.
II. Minutes
The minutes of November 12, 1991, were amended in two places to indicate
reference to Maplewood in Motion, not Maplewood Review (once under Diversity
Awareness Award, once under Human Rights Award) . Thus amended, the minutes
were moved, seconded, and approved..

A. DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD
Five applications were received for the Diversity Awareness Award. The
following schools in Maplewood applied: Carver Elementary, Weaver Ele-
mentary, Hill Murray High School, Mounds Park Academy, and Transfiguration
Church School.
Gail contacted Premier Bank to confirm their financial support for the
award. The Commission was urged to formalize its request for the $500,
specifying the date of the award presentation, in a letter to the bank.
Karla will contact the editor of the Maplewood Review, stating that, in
recognition of December 10 (International Human Rights Day) , the Commis-
sion selected a winner of the Diversity Awareness Award and that the
award would be presented on January 15 (Maplewood's Human Rights Day) .
James will send a formal letter to Dr. Rosa Smith to confirm her role as
keynote speaker at the ceremony on January 15, which will take place
between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Other communications which need to be made were discussed: letters to
the award winner and all applicants, inviting them to attend the Maplewood
Human Rights Day program and presentation of the award at City Hall.
Gail added that entire schools should be invited, and Dawn suggested that,
if the winner is a District 622 school, its Board of Education should be
notified.
At the next meeting, Commissioners will plan the agenda for the Maplewood
Human Rights Day program and award presentation.
