MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
Tuesday, March 10, 1992

I. Call to Order
The meeting of the Maplewood Human Relations Commission was called to order at
7:15 p.m., on March 10, 1992, by Karla Sand, Chair.
II. Minutes
Minutes of the February 4, 1992 meeting was accepted as amended.
III. Old Business
Two nominations received re: Human Rights Award. Motion to extend the date for
nominations to be accepted for the Human Rights Award to April 3, 1992. Next
meeting to be held on April 9, 1992 at City Hall.
Six applications went out for new members to the Human Relations Commission.
Only one application form was received back. It was suggested that the applicant be
interviewed at our next meeting on April 9.
Karla and Dawn have roughed up a new draft of changes for the 1991 Annual Report.
Gail will follow through and put together a rough draft. Discussion centered around
the goal to identify areas to work with local businesses in the area of cultural diversity
in the workplace - especially ways to involve Maplewood businesses in participating
more with Human Rights issues.
IV. New Business
Winona letter re: incidents of discrimination or bias crimes based on sexual
orientation. The Maplewood Commission has no knowledge of any such incidents.
It was suggested that Gail contact the Maplewood Police Department re: any crimes
based on sexual orientation that have been reported before discussing
recommendation in support of amending the state law is made.
V. Reports
At Crystal on February 23 - League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission met -
report made by Pat Williamson on September 19 - Annual conference set - Focus on
leadership and Human Rights.
St. Louis Park meeting - Jim Garrett reported on this. Meeting was held on February
19, in St. Louis Park attended by Richfield, Minneapolis, Golden Valley, Maplewood,
and Bloomington. Strong emphasis that all commissions be fair in all matters of
possible discrimination in their communities.
City of Maplewood - Gail passed around a letter of thanks from Scott on his Special
Recognition Award from League. Mike reported on prospective budget cuts - they
could be severe enough to require some personnel layoffs for Maplewood. Memo on
procedures regarding missing children handed out for information.
