HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/07/1989 MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, February 7, 1989 Maplewood City Hall 7:00 p.m. PRESENT ABSENT Pat Williamson, Chair Sister Claire Lynch Karla Sand, Secretary Clemence Kwapick Scott Rostron Carol Engel Paul Sand Gail Blackstone Mike McGuire, City Manager Meeting was called to order by Chair Pat Williamson. MINUTES According to the Bylaws and the attendance clause, Clemence is no longer a member of the Commission. Minutes of the January 1989 were approved as presented. FOLLOW UP ITEMS The Human Rights Award presentation and ceremony at 3M went very well and the attendance was excellent. Karla will send a letter to the Suburban Chamber thanking them for their cooperation. The $35 placque charge will be paid by the Commission budget Terms of office for Scott Rostron, Pat Williamson and Sister Claire Lynch are January 1, 1989 through December 31, 1991. New members, Paul Sand and Carol Engel, have terms from January 1, 1989 through December 31, 1991 as well. Karla Sand's term ends December 31, 1989. Gail will publish an article in the Maplewood Review and the Maplewood in Motion about membership on the Commission. There is one open position. Pat Williamson reported that she sent the desegregation letter to District 622. MINUTES January, 1989 Page 2 NEW BUSINESS Commissions are to submit Quarterly Reports on grievances to the MN Department of Human Rights. In the future, the Commission will keep copies of the grievances in the City Manager's office. No Fault Grievance training is available for the new members if they contact the state department. 1988 ANNUAL REPORT Commission members are encouraged to bring ideas on content of the report to the March meeting; i.e. essay, news articles, attendance, goals. COMMISSION BUDGET Budget for the Commission for the period 1/1/89 through 12/31/89 is $350. REPORTS . .Pat Williamson called the Ramsey County Nursing Home to have them put a notice on their board for Martin Luther King Day. . .Sr. Claire called the Maplewood State Bank for a notice on their board for MLK Day also. Sister Claire and Pat will write letters to each place and say thank you. MISCELLANEOUS Scott asked what the MN League of Commissions position is on school closings on Martin Luther King Day. Pat will bring this up at a League meeting. Paul suggested the Commission contact the local newspaper about having a column on human rights issues. Commission also suggested having articles in the Maplewood in Motion. Commission members are to bring to the March meeting topics for articles. Gail will bring minority population figures of Maplewood to the March meeting. Meeting adjourned at approximately 8:00 p.m.
