Minutes
Members present: Gordie Heininger, Rita Ander, Elmo Mattox, Carol Cude and Joan Wurdeman.
Members Absent: Donna Brown and Tammy Nadzieja
Staff Present: Colleen Callahan
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:29 p.m.
II. Approval of Minutes: Elmo Mattox moved and Gordie Heininger seconded a motion to
approve the minutes of the May 1, 2001, meeting as written. All members voted in favor
of the motion.
III. Approval of Agenda: Joan Wurdeman added an agenda item from the Minnesota League
of Human Rights Commission under reports. Gordie Heininger moved to accept the
amended agenda, Elmo Mattox seconded the motion. All voted in favor of the motion.
IV. Old Business:
A. Access Update/Discussion—Reported on by Joan Wurdeman. The letter that was
formatted and discussed at last month's meeting (with spelling correction noted
by Carol Cude)will be sent to all of the stores that were tested as part of the
project.
Hill Murray would like to be involved in another testing project if the commission
decides to conduct one. Ms. Foley (woman who submitted letter to Commission
on the project)would also like to provide input on the next disability project.
B. Objectives and Mission Statement Discussion: Affordable Housing- Gordie
Heininger will follow up with his daughter to get the name of a developer whom
he will invite to the September meeting to educate the Commission on obstacles
to affordable housing encountered by developers.
After a discussion on way the Commission can keep informed on affordable
housing issues in Maplewood, it was decided that Gordie will speak to Melinda
Coleman about this topic. In addition,Rita will write a letter to Melinda Coleman
listing the findings/issues identified by the disability study and ask that she
forward the letter on to the following city agencies: the Community Design and
Review Board, the park Commission, the Planning Commission and the Housing
and Redevelopment Agency.

IV. Old Business - continued
C. National Night Out—Colleen reported on the games that Loudi Rivamonte had
demonstrated to some Commission members. She also passed around brochures
describing the games. After discussion, it was decided that the Commission would
demonstrate several of the games for the Maplewood Night Out activities and
would also have handouts describing the games for people to take home. For
Maplewood Night Out, Colleen will prepare instructions and game materials for
Mangala and the Zulu War Game; Joan will prepare instructions and game
materials for Heaven and Earth(Italian hopscotch); and Carol will prepare
instructions and materials for Kulit K'rang. Rita will type up another brochure of
game instructions and Colleen will copy this brochure and the one done by Loudi
to hand out to attendees. Commission members will also hand out leftover
materials from last year.
The working schedule for Maplewood Night Out is:
5:00 to 6:30-Carol and Joan;
6:30 to 8:00-Tammy and Gordie; and
8:00 to 9:00 -Rita and Elmo.
D. Poster Contest Proposal—This agenda item was tabled.
V. New Business
A. September meeting (after July and August recess)will be on September 11, 2001.
Dinner will be provided.
VI. Reports
A. Mort Ryweck (LMHRC Project Coordinator) will attend the October 2, 2001
meeting. He is interested in encouraging our involvement with the state
organization as well as setting up a conduit for information/project idea sharing.
