HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/07/2002 Ad& Maplewood Human Relations Commission May 7, 2002 Minutes Members Present: Rita Ander, Joan Wurdeman, Elmo Mattox, Gordie Heininger, Carol Cude, and Dave Thomalla, ex-officio Members Absent: Tammy Nadziej a I. Called to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. May 7, 2002. II. Approval of Minutes: Motion was made to approve minutes as written. It was seconded and it was passed. III. Approval of Agenda: Motion was made to approve Agenda. It was seconded and it was passed. IV. Old Business: A. Information about articles (Elmo & Gordie) (1) They picked some topics that we could ask for speakers from our community,just for our committee. Minutes would be taken of the speaker's ideas and that would be the basis of an article in the MIM. (2) Elmo has been talking to several people about a speaker concerning problems Hmongs are having for June. The HRC members requested that Elmo go ahead with finding a speaker for June. (3) At the end of each meeting, Elmo would hand out articles relating to HRC business and the community. He would like the subjects mentioned in the HRC minutes, as a record of subjects covered. B. History of Commission. On June agenda, we will discuss our bylaws and any needed changes V. New Business A. Awards and recognition certificates were distributed to commission members to take to the various schools. If awards are made at an assembly,please E-mail Dave so he can see about the bank's representative being there. B. An Inter-religious Response to Hate &Bigotry - Fifty-seven people plus panel came to the April 9 meeting. Quite a few people were there from the Council of Churches, Eagan residents interested in having a commission, and members from Joan's Church. Human Relations Commission May 7, 2002 —Meeting Minutes Page 2 - Elmo—we need a checklist of equipment needed, supplies to get, etc. There was no Power Point, no screen, etc. - K. Juenemann complimented our commission and the job we are doing. - Dave Huddleston and someone from the paper were there. - Dave Thomalla was a big help with the AV materials. - Panel discussion was colorful with good discussions and some controversy. C. Procedural Acts of Bias and Prejudice The commission reviewed the 1/01 copy of the procedure and revised wording in several sections. D. No interviews. VI. Reports A. Flyer on League of MN Human Rights Commission. B. We are co-sponsoring an event in July—"Listening Through an Accent"—on respectful listening. C. Dave will not be here at the June meeting—his child is graduating from 8th grade. D. When we interview candidates that apply, they should be sent our annual report so they know more about us. The annual report was presented to the board two weeks ago. VII. Motion to adjourn, seconded. Respectfully Submitted, Carol Cude Secretary, HRC ASSIGNMENTS - Elmo will get a speaker on the Hmong culture. - Review bylaws of HRC (in April packet) to see if changes are needed or necessary. - Dave will provide a copy of the brochure shared with victims. - Rita will rewrite the Acts of Bias and bring a draft to the June meeting.
