A Maplewood resident died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul after he was pulled from a fire in his home
June 28.
The man was in critical condition with burns and smoke inhalation by the time he reached the hospital,
according to law enforcement.
Maplewood fire and police departments were dispatched to the burning house in the 1800 block of
Kennard Street at approximately 2:50 p.m. On their arrival, they found someone at the back door, trying
to pull a man outside.
According to Maplewood Fire Chief Steve Lukin, it was a neighbor who first responded after hearing
shouting that the house was on fire.
Lukin said, to his understanding, the neighbor went over to see if anyone was inside, and when he
opened the front door he found the man collapsed on the ground near the entryway. The neighbor was
able to drag the man halfway out by the time emergency responders arrived to assist.
Lukin said medical assistance was then administered immediately.
According to a press release, the fire was contained in the kitchen and family room, but resulted in heavy
smoke damage throughout the home.
At press time, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner had not yet determined a cause of death, and the
name of the deceased was not yet released.
Lukin said the Maplewood Fire Department and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office are still
investigating the cause of the fire.
“On behalf of the department, we offer our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Lukin said in a
statement.
