HomeMy WebLinkAbout09/01/1981 Minutes of Business Meeting MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION September 1, 1981 Present: Jim Haynes, Maria Larsen, Sister Claire Lynch, Scott Rostron, Pat Williamson, Robert Williamson Regrets: Lucille Bryant, Peter Fischer, Earl Marlow Approval of the Minutes of the August 4, 1981, meeting was moved by Larsen, seconded by Sister Claire. Motion carried. Chair Larsen announced that Earl Marlow has decided to resign. Maria will write a letter of thanks for his participation n the Commission and indicate his resignation is accepted with regret. Several items related to the Minnesota League of Human Rights Commission were discussed: Annual Meeting - all who attended agreed it was extremely worthwhile and felt that the presentors and content were excellent. Congratulations will be extended to the League for planning and executing such an event. No Fault Grievance Training - a schedule for these training sessions was received from the State Dept. of Human Rights. Maria will coordinate sign-ups and inform the SDHR. Virginia Board Meeting - Peter will give us this report at another meeting. League Board Meeting - Plymouth, MN - Maria requested advice on which items should be presented for information/action. It was agreed that we communicate with other HR Commissions prior to making specific suggestions to the League involving development of a communication mechanism. Maria Larsen reported for Peter Fischer that a letter had been sent to the State Department of Human Rights concerning the Familial Housing Survey. City Ordinance No. 405 was distributed for review and attention. Following discussion, Haynes moved, and Lynch seconded, that the Ordinance be changed to read: THE COMMISSION SHALL CONSIST OF NINE (9) MEMBERS. Motion carried. The Secretary was instructed to forward the requested change to the City Council for action, via the staff liaison. Chair Larsen distributed a package of "New Right's" materials which she asked the members to review and digest prior to next month's meeting, when the item will be up for discussion and possible action. (cont'd) MHRC September 1, 1981 Page 2. The Human Rights Newsletter recently carried an article on an Accessibility Study which might be considered as a Commission goal for our own city. This will be brought up for discussion at the next meeting. Secretary Williamson indicated that the Commission's Annual Report had been forwarded to the staff liaison for final duplication. The completed document should be available at the October meeting. General discussion was held related to inviting visitors to speak on special topics at Commission meetings, and also on which issues might be presented. Some issues mentioned were: abuses in schools through drugs and alcohol; contact with community residents about their concerns; the .New Right's impact on curriculum development in the schools, and the emergence of "neighborhood patrols." Everyone was reminded to review all the materials distributed prior to the next meeting on October 6. Meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m. Submitted by Pat Williamson Secretary
