Maplewood Human Relations Commission Business Meeting October 5,1982 Absent: Haynes, Williamson Minutes of 9/21/82 business meeting approved as mailed. High School Pakcet - MN HR Act -Fischer Peter will give presentations on the same day to four classes of "American Problems" at Hill/Murray High School. . 50 minute presentation. . Brief summarization of the act,item by item -- what it is,what guarantees it provides, and who the guarantees apply to. . Sexual harrassment appears to be a major discriminatory item, so may stress it. . Will use visual aids. . Suggestion . . . . use a film or slide presentation which would break up the presentation and cement attention span. Senior Citizen Condo Project - Bryant Community residents packed the council meeting and were up in arms. However, several members of council have toured facilities since the presentation of the plans to the council. Are having second thoughts. Plan is well laid out and would plug the seniors into the amenities provided by the Hazelwood Center. Item before the Council, again, on October 7th. Annual Report -Bryant To increase commission visibility, we will send copies to the other service groups within the City such as the HRA, North, Tartan and Archbishop Murray High School, North St. Paul and Maplewood public libraries, League of MN Human Rights Commissions and, of course, Manager = City Council = and depart- ment heads. Accessibility Study - Discussion of NHHI Services Discussion of agent presentation and the services NHHI would provide. Since the accessibility study is a primary goal for the Commission and the agency would provide guidance from A-Z, motion was made and carried, that we employ NHHI. Julie will be contacted again by Scott, asked to the next business meeting, and we will take the preliminary steps to implement the study. Proposed Handicapped Amendment to HR Act - Rostron State Council for the Handicapped, special task force, developing appropriate language to go into the HR Act which would pro”ide appropriate protection for disabled persons that are applied to state protected classes, or to other persons by federal law. HR department will co-author legislation with the State HC. Motion: MHRC go on record in support of the language and intent of the proposed legislation. Carried. Secretary requested to write a letter to the State Department of HR stating we have seen the draft and support it. Page 2 Meeting of October 5,1982 Larsen offered to bring it to the attention of the League or Minnesota Human Rights Commission at their next board meeting October 30,1982. Accepted. Will request communication as League and also as private citizens to their legislators. Old Business: Can a non-certified commissioner work on a case with a certified one? Maria called intake. Unqualified Yes. Very good training ground. Scott and Maria are thereby assigned to case fM . Case #3 update: Bus driver. Respondents would not meet with no fault grienvance officers.
