S:\CITY MGR\HRC\AGENDA Maplewood Human Relations Commission November 6, 2002 Minutes Members Present: Rita Ander, Carol Cude, Gordie Heininger, Elmo Mattox, Joan Wurdeman Ex-officio: Kevin Johnson Members Absent: Barbara Damchik-Dykes Moved: Tammy Nadzieja Guests: Sherrie Adams, Nelda Rhodes-Clark I. Called to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes: Motion was made to approve the minutes as written. It was seconded and passed. III. Approval of Agenda: Motion was made to approve the Agenda as written. It was seconded and passed. IV. Old Business: A. Emma's Place: Permanent sober living to build community and put down roots. Target population is single parents, but would accept couples. All now are single moms. Some have mental health issues or physical disabilities. Have volunteers for tutoring and activities after school. Have a resident and teen council to help. People who relapse (not use regularly) are counseled and offered treatment. Section 8 housing—pay 1/3 of income. Eight of 12 are now working. All are 3 and 4 bedroom units. Largest family now is 8. Have 50+kids, about 18 teenagers. Most families had been homeless. Have 5 paid staff, a security company 8 p.m. —4 a.m. and full time on weekends. Kids have an 8 p.m. curfew unless working or with parents. Some have cars; use buses. Site is looking at buying a van. Insurance is a problem. B. Rita—Bylaws changes. Was sent to Kevin, so we need to table this until the next meeting. C. Elmo and Gordy— Speakers 1. Social service agencies within Maplewood -having a round table discussion and time for audience to ask questions; we would sponsor. 2. Roger Svendsen—possible speaker on substance abuse—can speak to us. Human Relations Commission November 6—Meeting Minutes Page 2 3. Kevin Johnson suggested we might have a speaker on group homes in our area. V. New Business: A. Human Rights Day meeting—December 6. B. Rita retyped the checklist for speakers or presentations into 1 page. C. Carol's last meeting will be December 2002. VI. Reports: None. VII.
