Minutes
Members Present: Rita Ander, Elmo Mattox, Gordy Heininger, Joan Wurdeman, Barbara
Damchik-Dykes, Carol Watnemo
Ex-officio: Kevin Rabbett
Guests: Marilyn Gebaner, Roberta Hawkins
I. Called to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m.
II. Presentations: City Council Member Kathleen Juenemann presented certificates of
appreciation to departing Commission Chair Rita Ander and Commissioner Joan
Wurdeman for their years of service to the Commission.
III. Approval of Minutes: Motion was made by Joan Wurdeman to approve the minutes as
written. It was seconded by Gordy Heininger and passed.
IV. Approval of Agenda: Motion was made to approve the Agenda.
V. Old Business
A. Final review of the annual report. A suggestion was made to include the poster
winner's art on the cover of the report.
B. Diversity poster contest. A proposal was made that there be some sort of personal
contact with the principal or other staff member of each school. Presentations will be
made to the diversity contest winners. Elmo provided a timeline to assist with
preparation for next year's contest. Alternatives should be looked at next year, i.e.,
email, coordinating with Diversity Celebration Day. Perhaps the Commission could
partner with District 622's calendar.
VI. New Business
A. Discussion was held regarding the public hearing on Emma's place.
B. The City of Maplewood financial report was made available to Commission
members.

C. Commission elections are postponed until September.
D. Commission interviews. Marilyn Gebaner and Roberta Hawkins were
interviewed for openings on the Commission.
VII. Reports: None
VIII. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned at 8:45.

2002-2003 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Establish a partnership with local businesses, educational, religious and/or fraternal
organizations regarding human rights.
Sponsor and promote activities for the residents of Maplewood that will:
• increase sensitivity in, and awareness of, an area(s) of human rights;
and/or
• provide an opportunity for interaction between diverse members of the
community.
Invite and encourage local schools to participate in the annual Diversity Awareness
Award and the Diversity Awareness Poster Contest sponsored by the Maplewood Human
Relations Commission and Premier Bank.
Develop a working relationship with one or more of the Human Relations Commissions in
the Twin Cities area.
Attend various workshops and educational/informational activities related to diversity and
human rights.
• Collaborate with the Department of Human Rights on projects of mutual concern.
Advise the Mayor, City Council and the City of Maplewood of human relation issues.
• Collaborate with the Maplewood Police Department when acts of bias, discrimination,
and prejudice are reported.
• Promote and support awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act throughout the
Maplewood private and public sectors.
