Maplewood Human Relations Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday,December 2, 2003 Members Present: Barbara Damchik-Dykes, Marilyn Gebauer, Gordy Heininger, Elmo Mattox, Carol Watnemo Members Absent: Roberta Hawkins Ex-officio: Karen Guilfoile,Kevin Rabett Visitor: Jeff Kringle I. Called to Order: Elmo Mattox called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes: Motion was made by Gordy Heininger to approve the minutes. Seconded by Marilyn. Motion passed. III. Approval of Agenda: A bias crime report will be added. IV. Old Business: A. Roberta is working on what city information should be provided in languages other than English. Karen said that the same information is needed by the City and that the City and the Commission could work on this together. B. Gordy handed out the draft for the speaking contest. Hill Murray will be added to the list of participants. It was suggested that the judges come from outside the school system. Carol will contact Joy Mueller from District 622 to explore the possibility of including the speaking contest with the People's Fair 2004. V. New Business: A. Barbara and Karen will try to increase awareness of our Commission in the City News. Barbara will write an article. B. The Committee interviewed Chanda Ruschmeyer and Jeff Kringle as potential Commission members. C. Jeff Kringle will be recommended to be a member of the Commission to the City Council. D. The bias crime report started as road rage between a group of Asians and African- Americans. It ended in the CUB East parking lot with one boy being hit on the head with an apple. E. Jeff will contact the Toast Masters Club for possible judges for the Speaking Contest. VI. Adjournment. Gordy made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:35 p.m. The motion was seconded by Barbara. Motion passed. Maplewood Together We Can Human Relations Commission The Maplewood Human Relations Commission (HRC) is a seven-member committee. The mission of the HRC, in partnership with the State Department of Human Rights, is to secure for all citizens equal opportunity in housing, employment, public accommodations, public services and education and to work consistently to improve the human relations climate of the community. The HRC is not charged with specific duties but sponsors and promotes activities for Maplewood residents that increase sensitivity and awareness of diversity in our community, advise the Mayor, city council and other city commissions of human relations issues and offers no-fault grievance mediation services to the residents of Maplewood. The HRC meets on the first Tuesday of the month except for July and August. MAPLEWOOD,MINNESOTA-Together We Can!!
