APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes of the October 3, 1989 Human Relations Commission meeting were accepted as presented . 2. UPDATE OF GRIEVANCES a . Grievance involving an individual, volunteer fire department and the City of Maplewood . Pat W. is handling this case . b . Grievance 1>-i,'woon a womu.tl <,ge . Pat is following up on this case . c . Pat is following up on a situation between an individual and the City of Maplewood dating back several years . Commission received a notice from the Department to discontinue no fault process on 3 cases : two involving Sears and one involving One Potato Two . Commission member asked for an update on the incident involving a White Bear Lake Russian immigrant family. 3 . OLD BUSINESS a . Human Rights Award - Pat will contact the persons who submitted thenominations and ask for additional information. Commission agreed that we need to have an article in the Chamber newsletter nextyear about the human rights award and getting nominations . Gail will talk to Alice Ludley of the Suburban Chamber about an article in their newsletter about the essay contest award ceremony and Commissioner Cooper' s visit. Minutes/November 14, 1989 Page Two b . Essay Contest - The Commission received 4 entries by the deadline date and ten entries after the deadline date . The Commissioner voted to only consider those entries that were submitted by the deadline date. Carol will talk to the instructor who submitted the ten entries . Review and selection of the award winning essay will be done in Executive Session. 4. NEW BUSINESS a. State Human Rights Conference - December 8, 1989 Karla, Dawn and Scott have indicated they are interested in attending either the full day or one-half day of the conference . Gail will submit the application and send the registration fee . b. IGCI Conference - November 16 - The Intergovernmental Compliance Institute is conducting a workshop on Non- discrimination in Public Employment at a cost of $65. No members indicated they could attend . 5. ADJOURNMENT Next meeting - December 5, 1989. SPECIAL SESSION Each entry was read and evaluated by each Commission member. Melissa Coons will receive the award for her entry. Dawn will submit articles to the newspaper on our award ceremony and the award winner. Carol will draft letters to the winner and to all the other persons who submitted entries . Also to the bank notifying them of our intentions . Pat will contact the winner and her parents . Pat will also contact the radio station for some coverage of the event and Commissioner Cooper's appearance in Maplewood . Sr. Claire will contact Mr. Regan of the bank about the awards .
