MINUTES
Tuesday, January 5, 1988

Meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by Scott Rostron, Chair.
I. MINUTES
Motion was made to accept the Minutes of the December 8, 1987 meeting
with the following change, was seconded and voted in favor.
December 8 minutes should reflect that the Human Rights Award is to be
given to both Ed and Delores O'Mara.
II. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Scott presented the Commission's recommendation for the Human Rights
Award to the Maplewood City Council at their December 23, 1987 meeting.
The City Council approved the recommendation to award the Human Rights
Award to Ed and Delores O'Mara.
Tonight's plans include getting a plaque made, making a public announce-
ment and preparing for the Chamber of Commerce meeting where the
Award will be presented. The Chamber meeting is on January 28 at 12:00
noon at Weber's Super Club. Scott will notify the O'Maras and Mr.
Johnson. Scott will present the award at the Chamber meeting. Scott
will also invite the O'Mara children.
Mike McGuire will coordinate the press information onthe presentation
and also getting a plaque made.
Scott will coordinate all of this with Chuck Wiger of the Chamber.
Scott thanked Karla Sand for suggesting that the Commission present this
Award.

III. HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ACTIVITIES
Sue talked to the Maplewood National Bank and they put on their sign
"Share the Dream" 12-10-87 - Human Rights Day.
Karla talked to the Ramsey Nursing Home and they also honored the day on
their sign.
Sister Claire attended the State Human Rights Day dinner and heard Chevez
speak.
IV. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY ACTIVITIES - Monday, January 18, 1988
Sister Claire reported that Hill-Murray and the Priory had plans for
celebrating the holiday. Sister will also contact the other schools in
the district to remind them of the holiday.
Karla will contact the Ramsey Nursing Home and Sue will contact the
Maplewood State Bank.
V. GRIEVANCES
No report
VI. HOUSING REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
John the Commission's representative on the Authority attended his first
meeting. John gave a brief summary of the meeting and how he looked
forward to a role on this Authority.
Mike discussed the Winter Carnival and Maplewood's involvement. He
also addressed some of Maplewood's housing areas such as senior housing
and public housing.
Scott stated that the Commission is concerned that the Authority be
aware of state and local codes as far as discrimination is concerned and
the Commission be kept informed.
VII. MINNESOTA HUMAN RIGHTS LEAGUE ACTIVITIES
Karla is on the Board as well as Pat Williamson. The first meeting for
this year is on January 16 at Falcon Heights.

VIII. OTHER BUSINESS
Karla Sand, Pat Williamson and Sister Claire attended the Annual Meeting
of the Minnesota Human Rights League. At that meeting the point was
brought up for Commissions to ask their respective Cities if they have
a Personnel Committee.
Maplewood does not have a Personnel Department or a Personnel Committee.
Mike stated that the City is in the process of hiring someone into such
a position and that person would be the liaison to this Commission.
At that time the Commission may be asked to review policies, procedures,
and job descriptions, etc.
Mike suggested that the Commission present the 1987 Annual Report to
the Council in March or April of 1988.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:45 p.m. The next meeting is
scheduled for February 2 at 7:15 p.m.
