HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/03/1988 MINUTES MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Tuesday, May 3, 1988 7:00 p.m. Maplewpod City Hall ATTENDEES John Prey, Chair Pat Williamson Karla Sand Sue Hoyt Mike McGuire, City Manager John opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. and presented the Agenda. I. Approval of Minutes A motion was made, seconded and voted in favor of accepting the minutes of the April 5, 1988 Commission meeting with the correct spelling of Clemence. II. Old Business The Ruiz v. Pasquales grievance was discontinued and referred to the State. Presently the Commission has no active grievances. Annual Report - John will submit a letter for the Annual Report to Mike and then the report will be ready for publication and submission to the City Council. III. New Business * Human Rights Award - The criteria for the award were revised as follows : . .performed specific service or activity as a volunteer or paid employee to preserve equality and justice for groups of people whose circumstances make them vulnerable to prejudice, discrimination or injustice, or . .showed commitment to protecting and preserving the dignity and worth of all persons . * John will talk to Scott about a copy of the Commission' s bylaws. Mike will bring a draft set of bylaws to the Commission' s June meeting. * 1988 Goals and Objectives and Activities - John brought these to the attention of the Commission. They are noted in the 1987 Annual Report. These are very ambitious goals and will take the work of all the members. Page 2 * Grievance Training - The training for April 23 in Maplewood was cancelled. IV. Reports * MN League of Human Rights - The Annual Conference is in October at the St. Paul Radisson. She noted that there was low attendance at the last meeting and the attendance policy will be put into effect . * City Manager - Reported that a strike of city employees was averted. Mike reported that the city hired a Staff Services Coordinator and she will be the staff person to this committee. * St. Paul Human Rights Commission - John attended the St. Paul meeting and hopes to attended another one in the near future. Pat would like to attend one also. * Housing Redevelopment Authority - The topic of temporary housing for the homeless in Maplewood was discussed. Sue Hoyt is working on this with the County. V. Miscellaneous * Commission membership will be discussed at the time the bylaws are developed. * Pat gave Mike a certificate for Scott for his years of service to the Commission and for his years as chair. Mike will have it framed and we' ll present it to Scott at another meeting. Pat will send Scott a get well card. Next meeting is on June 7, 1988.
