Pirrung presented the petition,read the
cover letter, and sat down. The city staff
was directed by the council to verify the
signatures and report back to the council.
State statute requires not less than 15
percent of those registered voters who
voted in the last municipal election to sign
the petition for a special election to take
place.
City Attorney Don Lais verified the
petitioners' contention that the last city
election was the paramedic election and
not the general election held Nov. 2 last
year.He said this was so because no local
candidates were elected Nov. 2. The 254
exceeded the required amount of
signatures.
MAPLEWOOD MAYOR Robert Bruton
commented later, "I am against it. You
are not going to get a person as qualified
as a professional who is going to be able to
run the city in the form of a politician.
Many of the signatures belong to large
landowners who have a vested interest,
and who are trying to gain control of the
government. And when that happens,
watch out."
Pirrung responded, "They are legal
residents and just concerned people (the
people who signed the petition)."Pirrung
