The city staff was directed by the council to verify the signatures and report back to the council. State statute requires not less than 15 percent of those registered voters who voted in the last municipal election to sign the petition for a special election to take place. City Attorney Don Lais verified the petitioners' contention that the last city election was the paramedic election and not the general election held Nov. 2 last year.He said this was so because no local candidates were elected Nov. 2. The 254 exceeded the required amount of signatures. MAPLEWOOD MAYOR Robert Bruton commented later, "I am against it. You are not going to get a person as qualified as a professional who is going to be able to run the city in the form of a politician. Many of the signatures belong to large landowners who have a vested interest, and who are trying to gain control of the government. And when that happens, watch out." Pirrung responded, "They are legal residents and just concerned people (the people who signed the petition)."Pirrung
