suburban relocation
People who had been recently hospitalized at St. John's were surveyed, and
Reiling said the survey revealed that over 40 percent of the people surveyed had
chosen to be hospitalized at St. John's.
"We are very thankful that people feel that way about St.John's,"said Reiling.
WEST STRESSED the hospital's committment to family care as a major factor
in people choosing St. John's. He added that the hospital has a close working
relationship with specialists so when a physician admits a patient to the hospital,
he has 40 specialists available.
Reiling said that the land the hospital owns in White Bear Lake is not easily
accessible. Therefore, the hospital is in the process of acquiring land in the
proposed area for the facility.Reiling said that the area of most interest is east of
Hwy. 61 off I-694.
Reiling said it was premature to discuss the type of facility that would be
constructed. He emphasized that the facility would be "consistent with com-
munity desires and needs."
Reiling said that hospital staff is currently visiting with civic and planning
groups to discuss the hospital's plans. "St. John's can not make this decision
alone," said Reiling, stressing that the hospital relocation is a public policy
decision.
"We want to make sure the public is well aware of it(hospital relocation)and
supports it. We are working to gain greater insight into the communities'
feelings."
ST.JOHN'S is also working with a committee assigned to the hospital by the
Metropolitan Health Board to insure its plans are consistent with the overall plans
of other health institutions in the area.
Constructed in 1911 to serve the needs of the German-Lutheran community, its
original 65-bed capacity has grown to 370 beds today. Its staff of 350 physicians
and 1,200 employees provide services to the East Side of St. Paul and its
surrounding communities. Members of its board of directors represent area
Lutheran churches.

NORTH ST.PAUL led the total percentage of medical-surgical patient days which
St.John's Hospital accounted for in 1976.Of all persons from North St. Paul being
hospitalized,47 percent were hospitalized at St.John's.West White Bear Lake was
second with 43 percent.More persons in the north and east St.Paul suburbs utilize St.
John's hospital than any other hospital. St. John's plans call for the facility to be
moved to a central location within the hospital's primary service area (dark area).
