A commercial kennel opera-
tion, which was shut down in
1972,will not be revived by a dif-
ferent operator,the Maplewood
City Council decided recently.
BY A UNANIMOUS vote,the
council denied Larry Mehsi-
komer's request to operate a
commercial grooming and
boarding kennel at 2360 E. Coun-
try Rd.D. A former kennel was
operated from 1962 to 1972 by
Clayton Huckenpoeler.
When his wife died Hucken-
poeler decided to retire from the
dog boarding and grooming busi-
ness. Recently Mehsikomer saw
the kennel was still at Hucken-
poeler's residence but not in
operation. That's when he ap-
plied for the license.
"I think this area needs this
type of facility,"Mehsikomer
said.
- BUT LOCAL NEIGHBORS
vehemently disagreed. They said
the prospect of 10 to 20 dogs con-
gregated at the kennel would
cause problems including"odor
generated by accumulation of
waste"and"noise of barking
dogs." 'fit 41
"Possibly there is a noise
problem,"Mehsikomer.acknowl-
edged of the people who signed a
petition in opposition to the ken-
nel.
But Mehsikomer continued: "I
would take the dogs inside at
night. This would eliminate most
of the noise problem.
"I don't think it would be a
problem because everyone in the
neighborhood owns a dog or
two."
HOWEVER,Nellie Minnis-
choffer, 2354 County Rd. D,said,
"We had the kennel before and
were very disappointed and we
feel we shouldn't have to have
one come in.
"I think it's one of the worst
things we could develop in the
neighborhood,she said.
But Huckenpoeler,who still
lives on the site where the kennel
is located, said Mrs. Minnis-
choffer had no reason to gripe
about barking dogs.
"I believe that Mrs. Minnis-
choffer has a chicken over there
that crows at all hours of the
night,"Huckenpoeler said. He
added: "I don't believe it (the
commercial kennel operation) is
that much of a detriment to the
community around there."
