Maplewood councilmen, proving
they are more traditionalists than
progressives, unanimously voted
last Thursday night to retain the
city's original and current city logo,
the maple leaf.
The old maple leaf's existence
was threatened, it seems, when
Manager Michael Miller became
enamored of the Maplewood Mali's
maple leaf.So much so,in fact,that
he recommended to the council that
the city utilize the Mall's logo "for
city government purposes."
But the council would have none
of Miller's radicalism.
"To me this (Homart's leaf) is
not the true maple leaf," coun-
cilman John Greavu declared. And
then he added,"We've had that leaf
(the city's current logo) out on the
front of this building (the city hall)
ever since its inception."
The Mall's leaf.
"I would hate to have them take
this away from us," Greavu con-
cluded.
Mayor Robert Bruton displayed a
conservative concern for the old
maple leaf too. "I like the current
symbol," he said. "It (the
Maplewood Mall leaf) is fine for
Homart. It's more modern and
progressive. But I like the more
traditional leaf."
Councilman Donald Wiegert,
bringing in the more practical side
of the controversy, noted that if the
city adopted the Maplewood Mall
leaf the city would have to establish
some different colors so the two
leafs,representing the two entities,
could be separated.
Traditionalists in Maplewood can
now rest easy that their maple leaf
has survived the challenge of a new
upstart.
