Local school takes a moment to
remember its namesake, John Glenn

John Glenn passed away Dec. 8 at the age of 95. He was the first American to orbit Earth and went on to
have a long career as a U.S. senator from Ohio.
At age 77 he was part of a NASA Shuttle crew and became the oldest person to go into space.
The day after the former astronaut’s passing, the staff at John Glen Middle School in Maplewood shared
a brief tribute about the building’s namesake during their morning announcements.
The announcement said, “Our school opened in 1962 without a name. On the day of the space launch,
the school board called a meeting while the rocket was on the launch pad and proposed the name of
John Glenn Junior High School for the new building.
“The motion was tabled and the board watched the pre-launch activities together. As soon as the
spacecraft went into orbit, the motion was passed making our school the first to be named after John
Glenn!”
