The Standards and Excellence Program (StEPs) for History Organizations is American Association of State
and Local History’s (AASLH) standards program designed specifically for small to mid-sized history
organizations. Organizations enrolled in StEPs assess their policies and practices and benchmark
themselves against nationally recognized standards. StEPs certificates mark an institution’s progress
towards enhancing standards and management of their resources.
Maplewood Area Historical Society received silver certificates in stewardship of historic structures and
landscapes as well as mission, vision and governance. MAHS also received bronze certificates in
interpretation, audience, management, and stewardship of collections.
MAHS was awarded a $10,000 legacy grant to hire a professional facilitator for the StEPs program.
“This is a major step in the right direction for the growth of our organization, and the continued trust of
our community. We’re quite proud of our progress on this 3-5 year plan.” said Nicole DeGuzman,
Executive Director.
The Maplewood Area Historical Society was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)3 in 1997 to preserve
and interpret the history of Maplewood through collections, events, exhibits and programs. Most of
their events, exhibits and meetings are at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm, but they also sponsor tours,
talks and other programs offsite. The Maplewood Area Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and
interpreting the history of Maplewood and its people to ensure this legacy is passed on the future
generations.
