Carver Elementary in Maplewood recognized for success — Twin Cities
Carver Elementary School in Maplewood has been recognized by the Minnesota Business Partnership for its work
as a "high -performing, diverse" public school.
The 2016 Minnesota's Future Award includes a $50,000 prize and recognition at the partnership's annual dinner.
"A quality education is critical to every child's future, and Carver is proving that students from all backgrounds can
succeed," Pat Ryan, chair of the organization's education policy committee, said in a news release. "Their
innovative, collaborative and data -driven approach is driving student success in Maplewood."
About 60 percent of Carver's students are low-income, 20 percent are English learners, and almost two-thirds are
students of color. The school regularly outperforms state averages on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments,
or MCAs, in math, reading and science.
Carver has also scored well on the state's school accountability system, called the Multiple Measurement Ratings,
which measures test scores, student academic growth and success closing the achievement gap between minority
and white students. The school has been named a "reward school" by the state multiple times.
"A core value at Carver is that every child can learn," said Gena Abrahamson, the school's principal. "Our teachers
work hard to help students grow emotionally and academically."
Each year since 2006, the business partnership has recognized elementary schools that succeed with diverse
student populations.
