Maplewood
to create
new zoning,
Maplewood's City
Council has moved to
create a new zoning dis-
trict, known as commer-
cial office(CO).
THE PROPOSAL,
which seems to have 4-1
backing of the council,is
geared for office com-
plexes.
City Manager Michael
Miller said uses allowed
in the district, based on
the proposal, include
professional or adminis-
trative offices, medical
and dental clinics and fi-
nancial institutions.
HE SAID restaurants,
pharmacies and some re-
.tail s ales businesses
would be permitted
when related in some
way with the office com-
plex.
These businesses, he .
added, must be located
in the office building,
rather than separate.
He also described a
hospital, a convalescent
home, technical schools
and public utility service
buildings as appropriate
for the district.
When the city council
introduced an ordinance
that would set up the
district, only Council-
man John Greavu dis-
sented.
He argued that there
was no need for a new
district,that offices pres-
ently can go into the
city's limited business
commercial (L B C) or
business-commercial
(BC)zones.
Councilman Don.Wie-
gert admitted that there
was not much difference
between the proposed
CO zone and the LEC
zone.
"But it does," he not-
ed, "spell out in more
detail development stan-
dards than does LEC." 1
