DEFENDED
He said it was being fi-
nanced, in part. with a
mill levy increase of 11
per cent, a figure he des-
cribed as below the in-
crease in the consumer
price index for the Twin
Cities metro area.
"I t 's fashionable for
state officials," Miller
said, "to blame local offi-
cials for 'ever-increasing
taxes.' "
But he insisted that Ma-
plewood's mill levy sum-
mary indicates little fluc-
tuation over the years.
As an example, he said
that since 1969 Maple-
wood's levy ranged from
12.09 to 15.22 mills.
"Taxpayers also should
keep in mind," Miller
said, "that most"of the
property tax bill isn't due
to Maplewood's levy."
THE CITY, he said,
ceives less than 12 cents
from each property tax
dollar.
Miller said the new bud-
get has a general fund of
$2.254.070, up from the
past year's$2,083.120.
He said the budget ex-
penditures by source in-
clude $1.575.565 for per-
sonal services,$212,675 for
commodities, $1,168.295
for contractual services,
$471.622 for capital outlay.
$1.814.230 for debt service
and $24.217 for contingen-
cies.
