After a heated discussion, the
Maplewood City Council approved a
motion by Mayor Robert Bruton that the
city manager be authorized to keep two
people on the planning staff, either
through CETA funds or through the city's
general obligation funds.
Bruton said, "The planning staff will be
cut in half on January 1, 1977 if we don't
make this decision. If I were in our
associate planner's position, I would be
out looking for a job right now because
we've given him no indication of whether
his job(which is currently funded through
CETA) will be there after the funds for
this year run out."
City Manager Mike Miller said he had
received no indication whether the city's
CETA funds would continue in 1977.
Councilman Burton Murdock said, "I
can go along with the motion if we can get
something accomplished. I want to see
some accomplishments come out of that
office."
Councilman John Greavu said, "I'll go
along with it if it is paid by CETA.That's
the only way I'll go along with it."
Murdock told Miller,"There's got to be
some uncooperative people in that
department (planning). There was an
awful ill feeling between Reed(the city's
planner)and the plumbing inspector. We
shouldn't have to go through all this."
Miller responded, "I'm not getting any
kind of consistent direction from this
council and then I'm getting criticized
because of it."
"Mike, you've got a degree in municipal
governnment, I'm a plumber, but I've
never seen a ship run smooth where there
isn't cooperation, and there sure is some
missing in Maplewood," Murdock said.
Miller requested a shirtsleeves session
between the council members and himself
to work out the inconsistencies from both
sides.
The motion was passed to keep the
associate planner position open for the
following year by a 4-1 vote.
