Positive"vibes" came from the Maplewood City Council Thursday night on a
proposed new sign ordinance for the city.
Councilman John Greavu told representatives of the North St.Paul-Maplewood Area
Chamber of Commerce, which presented the proposed ordinance to the council,"I think
it looks real good,"Mayor Robert Bruton said he questioned"only a few minor points
and I personally don't have any hang-ups about what's included in this."
The council voted 5-0 to refer the proposal to city staff for review and recom-
mendations.
The Maplewood Community Design Review Board, which worked with the chamber in
preparation of the ordinance, will also review the proposal and make recommendations.
Bruton asked that the board be asked to act"as soon as possible"on the proposal.
The council has not had written guidleines regarding business and commercial signs
in the city and indicated a written set of guidelines and regulations would simplify
requests for signs and sign changes in the future.
