tag. ACTUALLY, Miller recom-
mended that the fee be$300 to
at least partially offset the city's
cost of making background
checks on license applicants.
(The fee is in addition to liquor
license charges.)
He said in some cases applica-
tions were withdrawn or the ap-
plicant did not have control of
the property in question.
"The handling of all of these
requests results in costs to the
city,"Miller said.
COUNCILMAN Burt Mur-
dock objected to the$300 fee.
"It's a hell of a jump from
zero to$300," Murdock said."I
think it's burying them too deep
at the start."
"Burying whom?" Mayor
Robert Bruton asked. "The city
pays for it."
Councilman Norman Ander-
son made the motion to set the
fee at$200.
"MAYBE $200 is enough to
discourage people who aren't
going anywhere with their ap-
plication," Councilman Donald
Wiegert said.
In a related item,Bruton made
a motion, which the council
passed, directing staff to com-
pare Maplewood's fees for vari-
ances and liquor licenses with
other similar communities.Bru-
ton said he wanted the council
to review all such fees.
