Maplewood residents will de-
cide June 1 if their city's par
a medic program will continue in
operation.
THE CITY council last week
picked June 1 as the day to hold
a referendum to exceed the tax
levy limitation by $189,000, the
sum needed to finance the par-
amedic program.
City Manager Michael Miller
said the program will end if the
referendum is turned down.
"We would have to stop train-
ing people and see if a private
firm can provide ambulance ser-
vice,"he said.
Miller pointed out that the
ambulance service would not
provide paramedics trained in
lifesaving techniques.
COUNCILMAN Burt Mur-
dock wanted to put a municipal
garage on the same referendum,
but Councilman Donald Wiegert
said there wasn't enough time to
get both issues before the voters.
The garage question could be
brought up for a vote either in a
primary or general election,
Miller said.
