get a boost from
Maplewood voters
' Maplewood voters Tuesday ap-
proved a referendum giving its t''
police department paramedic unit
another year of life in a decisive
1,553 to 130 vote.
The municipality's police par-
amedic unit,which began last Au-
gust, is the only one in Minnesota
and among few in the nation.
St, Paul and Duluth paramedic
units are operated by fire depart-
ments.
Voters authorized the city to fi-
nance the paramedics by exceed-
ing• Maplewoodc property tax
levy limit by$189,000.The refer-
endum will not raise property tax-
es because the $189,000 had been
included in this year's taxes.
Referendum defeat would have
reduced the city's property taxes
by$189,000, or $9.62 on a$20,000
home.
