The city of Maplewood now owns the
Ostergren farm, a rambling two-story
house and surrounding lands on Edgerton
street near the city's western border. The
farm is an effort to preserve some of
yesterday for tomorrow.
The house and grounds have recently
been dubbed "Maplewood Heritage
Center"and are serving as a collection
and display site for furniture and artifacts
of days gone by,given to the city by area
residents. The facility also serves as a
meeting center for various area civic
groups.
The home was the original house of
Edward and Anna Ostergren,a Dutch and
Swedish family which included seven
children.
Dr.Dan Ostergren,one of the family's
sons, who still lives across the street from
the old homestead, attended Edgerton
school,and after fifth grade,Cleveland
school. The family went to church at the
First Swedish Baptist Church on Payne
avenue.
The family owned and worked the large
truck farm, and had cows and chickens to
care for too.
Dr.Ostergren also said the house once
had a system of gas lighting, but that
electricity was added in the 1920's.
