Vikki feels that the pageant — win or
lose—is a good experience for girls.For
her, scholarship money awarded is very
important. She will be a senior at the
University of Minnesota this fall,
majoring in history and minoring in
dance and coaching, and she works to pay
her way through school.After graduation,

Another advantage of the competition,
Vikki says, is "the people you meet. I
know everyone says, 'Oh, you'll meet so
many wonderful people.' And when you
get into the pageants you find it's really
true. The unselfishness and the giving of
people is so great,I think you come out a
better person by knowing most of them."
She also feels competition helps build
poise and inspires contestants to self-
improvement.
"I don't see the Miss America com-
petitions as a beauty pageant. Beauty
isn't what you're judged on at all,except
perhaps the beauty that comes from your
talent." She said criticisms of such
competitions as "cattle shows" as has
happened in recent years is "un-
warranted.Anyone who is in or has been
in the competitions is not doing the
criticizing."
A number of area residents and friends
of Vikki's,including her parents,Mr.and
Mrs. Phil Andrews, are in Austin this
week, watching Vikki compete and tur-
ning out for her talent presentation
Friday, June 25. A gathering of those
friends and contestants for this year's
Miss Maplewood competition was held
Wednesday, June 16, at the home of Dr.
and Mrs.Richard Hastings and Vikki was
presented with an engraved necklace.
On the front it read"Queen Vikki,"and
on the back "Good luck, June 26, 1976."
"I intend to wear it in Austin," Vikki
said. "It's my good luck charm."
