Members of the Maplewood
City Council wondered out loud
last week if freestanding signs
eventually would be part of the
scenery throughout the city.
THE QUESTION came up be-
cause of a request by the Maple-
wood Animal Hospital, 2603
White Bear Ave.,for a freestand-
ing sign and a variarfce.,
"Have we reached the point
of freestanding signs in Maple-
wood?" Mayor Robert Bruton
asked.
"Where are we going to stop,
and when?" Councilman Nor-
man Anderson asked.
"I hope we recognize clutter
before it gets here,"Councilman
Donald Wiegert said.
Dr. C.J. Rosen of the animal
hospital said the sign is needed
because even salesmen who
want to sell the facility some-
thing have trouble finding it.
"WE HAVE emergency ser-
vice," he said. "But people
aren't aware of us." •
The council approved by a 3-1
vote(Anderson opposed)the re-
quest for a freestanding, 21-
square-foot sign, 13 feet high,
with the stipulation that Maple-
wood Animal Hospital stays an
emergency facility.
