$225,000
approved for
flood project
County participation of up to
$225,000 in the Ditch 17 flood con-
trol project in Maplewood was ap-
proved today by the Ramsey
County Board's Engineering and
Environmental Committee.
The entire project is estimated
to cost$684,000, with the city of
Maplewood and benefited homes
in the ditch's watershed contribut-
ing the rest of the cost.
THE CITY OF Maplewood is'
handling the construction of the,
watershed project and could let a
bid for the work to begin this year
if all approvals and hearings can
be completed.
The flood and erosion control.
area includes several square.
miles of Maplewood, bounded
roughly by Prosperity Avenue on
the West, Hwy. 36 and County
Road B on the north, North St.
Paul Avenue on the east and St.
Paul on the south.
County Engineer Deane Anklan
noted that the county already has
done some flood control work and
piping in part of the area and
would receive credit for this.
CURRENT ASSESSMENT rates
planned for the project are 2.5
cents per square foot for single,
family residential property and 5
cents a foot for all other higher
density use,including commercial
use.
In addition to reducing peak wa-
ter flowage and improving water
quality, the ponding areas to be
constructed as part of the project
would provide ground water re-
,
charge and wildlife habitat for the
Lake Wakefield-Ditch 17 area.A
small portion of the project would
serve a North St. Paul drainage
area as well.
