Sgt. David Arnold is 'officer of year'
Sgt. David Arnold of the Maplewood
�` Police Department has been named
"Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer
i of the Year."
The honor was bestowed upon Arnold by
the Nazareth Knights of Columbus
t Council No.4021 at a banquet in Roseville.
He was selected for the award from a field
.. of police officers from Roseville, Arden
Hills, New Brighton and Maplewood.

Maplewood Police Department for 14
years.Richard Schaller,Maplewood chief
of police, said his department recom-
' mended Arnold for the award because of
his"performance as a juvenile officer, a
police officer and for his heroic efforts in
i; " underwater rescue last December."
t ,, g He explained,on Dec. 1, Arnold was ill
`- with the flu and had just returned to the
' . police station after visiting a doctor.
t Shortly after monitoring an emergency
regarding a car being submerged in
-`' Phalen Lake, he responded to see if he
. could be of assistance.
A boat was launched on the lake by the
Maplewood Fire Department. Arnold got
into the boat and rode to the area where
°� the car was underwater,
y,,.,;. Despite the frigid tempteratures both
above and below the water surface,
Arnold tried to first open the locked
passenger door of the car.Unhesitatingly,
SGT.DAVID ARNOLD,juvenile officer for the Maplewood Police Department,was he plunged into the icy water,got the door
recently named Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Knights of open,unbuckled a seat belt and removed
the driver.
Columbus Council in Roseville. Schaller states, Arnold saved the
driver's life.
