AGENDA MAPLEWOOD CITY COUNCIL MANAGER WORKSHOP 6:00 P.M. Monday, June 27, 2016 City Hall, Council Chambers A. CALL TO ORDER B. ROLL CALL C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None E. NEW BUSINESS 1. Presentation from State Demographer Susan Brower F. ADJOURNMENT THIS PAGE IS INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK AGENDA REPORT TO: Melinda Coleman, City Manager FROM: DuWayne Konewko, EEDD Director SUBJECT: Presentation from State Demographer Susan Brower DATE : June 27, 2016 Introduction At the June 27 City Council Workshop meeting, Minnesota State Demographer Susan Brower will discuss specific demographic trends affecting Maplewood and surrounding communities. In addition, Ms. Brower will also share information regarding state-level trends that examine changes in population and demographics, aging of the work force, and the precipitous drop in new people entering the workforce. These trends suggest an increase in demand for high-skilled and service industry jobs. This data demonstrates that businesses will need to be creative and begin to look outside of the traditional workforce and focus on populations that may have been previously overlooked. In a recent Pioneer Press Editorial Board on May 8, 2016 titled Build Consensus on Racial Disparities Around Jobs, Ms. Brower stated that “coming demographic shifts, including the retirement of the baby boomers, will require using every single person to their fullest potential”. Ms. Brower, became the State Demographer in February 2012 and currently directs the Minnesota State Demographic Center. As part of her job duties, Brower travels the state discussing the demographic trends as it relates to the recent shift in population changes. As the City begins to develop a Business Retention Program aimed at facilitating relationships with the business community, a thorough understanding of the current and projected labor force trends is paramount. This information coupled with these business engagement efforts will provide the City with meaningful data to ensure that Maplewood continues to be a vibrant place to live, work and play – Maplewood Strong. Recommendation The discussion is informational only. No formal action by the council is required. Attachments None E1 Workshop Packet Page Number 1 of 1
