City of Maplewood’s Kid City is
a finalist for ArtPlace
America’s 2016 National
Creative Placemaking Fund

ArtPlace America announced June 6 that Maplewood’s Kid City is one of 80 projects that it will consider for its 2016 National Creative
Placemaking Fund. These 80 projects are 6 percent of the 1,361 initial applications that ArtPlace reviewed.
ArtPlace America’s National Creative Placemaking Fund is a highly competitive national program that invests money in communities
across the country in which artists, arts organizations and arts activities will help drive community development projects that are
addressing challenges or opportunities related to agriculture and food, economic development, education and youth, environment
and energy, health, housing, immigration, public safety, transportation or workforce development.
“We are thrilled to be finalists for the ArtPlace funding.” said Maplewood mayor Nora Slawik. “We have had a successful launch of Kid
City with our Laughter Labs, Laugh In and are now gearing up for Kid Council.”
Maplewood’s parks and recreation and police departments, along with mayor Slawik and the city council, have been working directly
with Z Puppets’ multicultural artists to activate kid citizens in Maplewood. This collaboration includes a series of interactive
installations and improvisational theater events researched, designed, built and presented by youth.
“A partnership with ArtPlace will allow us to reach more Maplewood kids and families to better connect our residents,” Slawik said.
In December 2016, ArtPlace will announce the final projects in which it will invest a total of $10.5 million.
