fifteen years
By KATHY HOLMES
Lucille Aurelius, city clerk, has been
with the City of Maplewood 15 years,as of
yesterday, Oct. 24.
She received her certification as a
municipal clerk with the International
Institute last January, although she was
appointed to her present position in 1969.
•
HER SALARY of$24,000 annually is a
far cry from the$200 a month she earned r
when she began as a clerk-typist in 1963.
Aurelius said that the main changes
since she has been with the city are the •
growth of Maplewood, the shift from "°""' "
optional plan A to plan B-manager form of
government, and the new registration LUCILLE AURELIUS, Maplewood city
procedure for elections. "It's hard to clerk,
believe, but we're a fairly new com-
munity.Maplewood was made a village in
1958," she said.
The registering at elections is a change
for all city clerks, Aurelius said. At the
primary election in Maplewood this year,
1,000 citizens registered at the polls.
Less than a third of the city's registered
voters,32 percent, went to the polls for the
primary,though,Aurelius went on to say.
"There are quite a few women city
clerks now.It didn't used to be that way,"
Aurelius said and added later on that she
never felt held back for being a woman.
As city clerk, she is one of seven
department heads with the city of
Maplewood. She maintains all city
records; retains assessment records and
assists in the preparation of assessment
rolls; interprets records and reports the
minutes of city council meetings and
directs and coordinates all city elections.
Mrs. Aurelius and her husband Eugene
live at 1885 Manton with the youngest six
of their twelve children.
