Please,
clear
hydrants
Buried fire hydrants create a
snow emergency that many
residents are not aware of, the
Maplewood Fire Department says.
The delay in looking for an un-
covered hydrant or in digging one
out could be the difference between
minor damage and complete
destruction of a home.
Maplewood Fire Marshal Al
Shadt said citizens will do them-
selves and their neighbors a favor
by clearing hydrants.Maplewood's
volunteer fire department spends
the small amount of free time it can
spare in training and fire equip-
ment
quipment maintenance.
"Most of the hydrants are placed
six hundred feet apart. If we have to
bypass a buried hydrant to a
cleared one down the line,it could
take as long as five minutes. And
five minutes is pretty crucial,"
Shadt said.
The Maplewood City Council,at
the suggestion of Mayor John
Greavu,expressed its appreciation
to the citizens who have voluntarily
shoveled the snow from fire
hydrants near their homes. They
also encouraged all citizens and
businessmen to remove the snow
that still remains around some
hydrants in an effort to aid
firefighters and add minutes should
a fire occur.
According to Schadt, city
firefighters lost several minutes
last week while they shoveled out a
fire hydrant during an apartment
house fire.
