Poisonous algae found at
Battle Creek off leash dog area
Ramsey County Parks and Recreation has
reported finding algae blooms that show the char-
acteristics of the poisonous Blue Green algae in a
pond at the Battle Creek off leash dog area.
The Blue Green algae is poisonous to humans
and animals by causing skin irritation or upper
respiratory infections, and it has been known to
be fatal.
The pond has been tested and currently meets
three of the four criteria for hazardous algae
blooms (HAB). A fourth test is still pending. The
pond will be tested weekly to monitor the toxic-
ity levels.
Signs have been posted near the pond alert-
ing visitors to the algae and the gate has been
chained and locked. No humans or animals
should enter or drink the water in the pond. It
will be reopened once the water is considered
safe for humans and pets.
