new hospital in
suburban area
• St. John's Hospital on St.
• Paul's near East Side is planning
to move to a suburban location.
Plans call for building a new
hospital that is centrally located
: in the primary area which St.
John's serves. The hospital's
: long-range plan, as submitted to
the Metropolitan health Board,
calls for a new building near In-
• terstate 694 between U.S. High-
way 212 and Minnesota Highway
61 in the White Bear Lake-
. Maplewood area not later than
1982.
• The site reportedly will be in
• the Maplewood Mall area, near
: Highway 61.
St. John's will contunue to be a
family hospital offering a broad
range of services. A rough esti-
: mate of cost for the new hospital
was set at between$15 million to
$30 million. The project will
need a certificate of need ap-
proved by the Metropolitan
Health Board and other agen-
cies.
St. John's primary service
area stretches north to the Scan-
dia area and south to the south-
ern edge of Maplewood. Suburbs
in the area include Lake Elmo,
Little Canada, North St. Paul,
Oakdale, Shoreview and White
Bear Lake. St. John's present
building at 403 Maria Ave. may
be kept if plans for the new
project are approved.
