The city of Maplewood and its
public works employees reached
a two-year contract settlement
early this week after the union
threatened to go on strike.
A decisive break in the nine
months of negotiations came at
last Thursday's meeting when
the City Council voted 3-2 to of-
fer the 19 employees about a 13
percent increase over two years.
On Monday,the union voted to
accept the offer.
MAYOR JOHN GREAVU and
councilmen Norman Anderson
and Roger Fontaine supported
the city offer,which included the
union's method for calculating a
disputed 15 cents per hour in
each worker's base pay. Dissent-
ing were councilmen Earl Nel-
son and Donald Wiegert.
Greavu indicated that the
city's past practice of computing
the worker's overtime pay,with
the 15 cents,committed it to the
union's interpretation of the base
salary calculation.
Contacted after the meeting,
Wiegert said the Council's vote
was a"horrid precedent."
"I didn't think we have done
what we did because we had tak-
en the stand that we had made a
final offer,"Wiegert said,"I
think that was the second or
third final offer we came up
with."
