Roger Fontaine,the first Q
runner-up in last November's
city election,was appointed by
Mayor John Greavu to fill a
council vacancy.

the council deadlocked in ap-

cancy was created when Greavu,
as an incumbent councilman,in
November defeated Burton Mur-

Nelson,who edged Fontaine for
election by seven votes,1,126 to
1,119,backed Fontaine.
After the deadlock,Wiegert l
offered two nominations,
Charles Kent,a former council- N
man,and James Hafner.But nei-

council support.
Greavu,at that point,appoint-
ed Fontaine."I know Hurt Mur-
dock is a fine man,"he said.
Greavu said he appointed Fon-
taine because"I felt with the
closeness of the race that the
people in Maplewood want him
(Fontaine)to be their council-
man."
