Roger Fontaine, the first Q runner-up in last November's city election, was appointed by Mayor John Greavu to fill a council vacancy. GREAVU'S ACTION was tak- en at last week's meeting after the council deadlocked in ap- pointing a new member. The va- cancy was created when Greavu, as an incumbent councilman,in November defeated Burton Mur- dock in the mayoral race. A subsequent state attorney general's opinion ruled it would be legal for Greavu to make an appointment. At the meeting,Councilmen Norman Anderson and Donald Wiegert supported Murdock,for- mer mayor and councilman. However,Greavu and Earl See Fontaine,Page 3(E) Fontaine Continued from Page 1 Nelson, who edged Fontaine for election by seven votes,1,126 to 1,119,backed Fontaine. Greavu,at that point,appoint- ed Fontaine."I know Hurt Mur- dock is a fine man,"he said. Greavu said he appointed Fon- taine because"I felt with the closeness of the race that the people in Maplewood want him (Fontaine)to be their council- man."
