Sewer, water rates up
Acting City Manager Robert Gatti announced this week the City Council has taken
action to increase water and sewer rates for North St.Paul users effective with the Feb.
1 billings.
Water rates, which have not changed since 1972,will increase approximately 20
percent for most users. The increase is due mainly to continued rising costs of main-
tenance,material and labor.Even with the increase,Gatti pointed out,rates will
remain low in comparison to surrounding communities. The new North St.Paul rate is
40 cents per 1,000 gallons with a$1.80 minimum charge. In neighboring Oakdale the rate
is 40 cents per 1,000 gallons plus$1.40 per month. In Maplewood it is approximately 64
cents per 1,000 gallons.
The cost of the new city well under construction is not reflected in the new rates. The
entire cost for this well is being borne by Maplewood residents using North St.Paul
water by a surcharge on their monthly bill.
Sewer rates will increase approximately 35 percent due to higher charges by the
Metropolitan Waste Control Commission.Sewage charges by the commission will in-
crease$30,500 for 1978.The city's portion of a sewer charge will increase slightly due to
rising costs for maintenance, repair and emergency services. Thus, most of the in-
crease in a sewer bill goes directly to the Metropolitan Waste Control Commission ratter
than the City.
The average North St.Paul sewer bill will be approximately$5.25 per month in
comparison to$5 per month for Oakdale and$4.75 per month for Maplewood.
