County
to explain
tax system
Ramsey County's new compu-
terized system of property ap-
praisals will be explained to tax-
payers at a series of meetings
scheduled through April.
By using a computer, the
assessor's division of the Proper-
ty Tax Department will have
more data on which to base esti-
mated market values of houses.
County Assessor Robert Ellis
said residents will be able to
judge in June what effect the
computerized process has on the
estimated market values of
homes.
Although the Property Tax
Department hopes to equalize
estimated market values by us-
ing the computer, the tax bills
will continue to be based on lim-
ited market values,which are al-
lowed to increase 10 percent an-
nually by state law.
After the residents are noti-
fied by the county what the new
values are in June,Ellis says the
computerized data will be avail-
able to judge how close the coun-
ty is to its goal of equalized valu-
ations.
The new system will be de-
scribed to St.Paul citizens at a 2
p.m. meeting April 5 in City
Hall.
Other meetings scheduled by
the Tax Department include:
Maplewood City Hall,March 30;
Arden Hills City Hall,April 13;
White Bear Town Hall,April 17;
Roseville City Hall, April 24;
Falcon Heights Fire Station,
April 26.The suburban meetings
begin at 7:30 p.m.
