Design plans were approved and bids The garage,to be located east of White
authorized by the Maplewood City Council Bear Avenue and south of County Road B,
Aug.25 for the city's new public works was given the nod by Maplewood voters
garage.The action brings the building one during a referendum held early this
step closer to construction, spring. Construction at that time was
projected to begin this summer.
With the council's action last week,bids
are expected to be let early September
with construction beginning on the'two
story building later that month.
The garage will be built partially below
ground to take advantage of the earth's
insulating qualities.The exterior will be
stucco and concrete.
About 10,000 square feet of the 30,000
square feet building will be allocated to
offices, The remaining area will be
divided among garage area and shop
area.
Access will be available via Van Dyke
Street and County Road B.Hazel Street,
which borders the property as a
residential street,will not be utilized for
access.
Allocation of$985,000 in the form of a
bond was approved by Maplewood voters
Feb.8.The projected construction and
design costs are expected to come quite
close to the bond issue.Councilman John
Greavu noted,"It's going to be tight on
this one,real tight."
The sight will be landscaped and fen-
ced.The former will involve shrubbery
and several trees.Fencing will be chain
link,with an additional sight screen.
