nixes project
GK by Anne Skinner
A project that could have cost
benefiting residents at least $8,000 each,
was tabled by the Maplewood City Council
July 14.
J The Dorland Road improvement
project, which began as a feasibility study
of sewer installation, mushroomed to
include water, and street improvements.
Due to that fact, Roger Singer, 1250
Dorland Rd., told the council, "Frankly,
the people on Dorland Road have not been
given enough information to decide
whether or not they want the im-
provements."
The council's initiated study was
completed as a result of several septic
systems overflowing in the Dorland Road
area. Singer argued he and many of the
residents only sought a sewer system and
perhaps a water line, if it could be found
to be economically feasible. "Frankly,
your costs are too high," he added.
Singer. who has practiced engineering
for 20 years, said the study's figures had
been juggled. He presented another cost
estimate that cut the city's estimate in
half, and reduced the scope of the project.
The council tabled the project in the
face of overwhelming opposition from
residents. Council members also cited
lack of staff as a possible reason for the
incompleteness of the report. In recent
months, Maplewood's planner and
engineer have both resigned, seeking
career advancements.
