Haw do you build community in a first -ring suburb without a city center or downtown to connect people?
In Maplewood, the answer is with laughter, at a free, family event held last week.
The city's "Laugh In" drew a large, diverse group of families and kids, Mayor Nara Slawik told us. It also wan
notice on Twitter as a community -making effort and "Best. Event. Ever" praise from Falcon Heights Mayor
Peter Lindstrom.
May 14 was declared Maplewood's first annual Day of Laughter, and the event featured youth performers
and Kid City, a grant -funded artist team working in the community to bring people together across cultures.
Included was a Jake Swap competition between the City Council and Police Department to collect the best
(G -rated) jokes. The police took the cake with this gem that wan favor, in particular, with kids in the crowd:
"What sings and chews trees? Justin Beaver."
