The action was taken on behalf of the __.---------
3M Company's request to meet with city
staff to work out a more equitable
agreement. Under the proposed or-
dinance the company would be charged
over $45,000 annually at seven cents per
1,000 gallons of water used.
The surcharge is being called a fire
protection charge to include those
residents with access to St. Paul water
but not availing themselves of it.
The company explained it originally
contracted with St. Paul for its water
because Maplewood had no capacity to
meet the company's needs. 3M also
provides its own fire protection.
"Even though we are not directly
benefited, we are willing to pay our fair
share,but under the proposed ordinance,
3M would pay nearly half the cost," said
Clair Larson, executive director of 3M
central engineering.
Under the proposed ordinance,
residents who use St.Paul water would be
charged $1.90 per quarter for single
family,townhouse and duplex dwellings.
